The Social Media Online Community Manager role is open to both individuals and firms who meet the below requirements, as a mid-level, part-time contract position only. This description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work necessitated by this role, and not as a full comprehensive list. Since its founding in 1938, The Bronx High School of Science has developed a worldwide reputation as one of the best high schools in the United States, attracting a diverse array of gifted students from across New York City.

The Bronx Science Alumni Association is an independent 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to:
• Building a sense of community among the school’s 35,000 alumni
• Strengthening the relationship between the alumni and the school
• Providing financial aid to the school in order to facilitate academic and extracurricular programming
The Bronx Science Alumni Association online community provides a platform for users to keep abreast of news about the school, find out about alumni events and fundraising opportunities, reconnect with old classmates, and foster new relationships among the alumni regardless of graduation year.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Online Community Manager will be in charge of the main marketing efforts for the community (including social/viral marketing, email marketing and more), maintaining a live and active relationship with contributors and Alumni Association Board Members, and managing various aspects of content on the website.

The ideal candidate will have an undeniable passion for social media marketing, as well as good understanding and experience in customer service, technology and traditional marketing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical
• Manage daily interactions with site hosting provider and all technical/administrative aspects of the web site, including registration issues, alumni questions, etc.
• Function as primary point of contact between Alumni Association & hosting provider for all technical issues related to the web site
• Work with Alumni hosting provider on upgrades, bugs and functionality enhancements (e.g., alumni store, credit card processing, members only section)
• Interact with the school website administrator to coordinate sites, get news and events, etc.

Content
• Manage and moderate discussion groups for appropriate content and terms of use violations
• Create and maintain strategic discussion groups for community benefit (e.g., class reunion organizers group), and support these groups with content, ideas, etc.
• Post news articles to maintain fresh content; publish news and updates from Alumni Association
• Create, send and track email campaigns soliciting donations, announcing important updates, etc.
• Post official Bronx Science & Alumni Association events on calendar; assemble and direct incoming messages, responses, RSVPs, etc. to the appropriate individual(s)

Social Media
• Systematically search for, aggregate and harvest content citing Bronx Science and its alumni
• Manage content creation, administration, and alumni engagement for the Alumni Association’s presence on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Yahoo and other social media channels
• Drive traffic to the Alumni Website by engaging alumni via external social media channels
• Identify additional opportunities to engage alumni via social media (e.g., Flickr, Meetup, etc.)
• Coordinate with Alumni Association to define goals & objectives for site performance and social media channels activity
• Recruit and oversee volunteer community leaders to help manage online content and activities, as needed

Strategic
• Ensure all content posted is optimized for maximum search engine ranking
• Implement social media best practices across all formal channels (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) to maximize user engagement on alumni site
• Build monthly reporting matrix to track progress and make additional recommendations
• Maintain and update social media strategy based on new tools and technologies
• Contribute to business development efforts to identify and form content partnerships
• Create and manage advertising and fundraising campaigns on the site

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for this position must have a keen attention to detail and quality focus, with demonstrated online or technical account management experience and at least the following:
• Bachelors in Marketing, Business or equivalent work experience
• Demonstrated background in cultivating online communities (including private communities, Facebook Fan Pages, Twitter, etc.)
• Ability to creatively use social media and Web 2.0 capabilities by proactively seeking out new tools (e.g., Unisfair, Mozes, etc.) to engage alumni community and increase contributions
• 2+ years managing third-party technology vendors and providers
• 5+ years experience in online marketing, email marketing, or web project management
• 2-4 years of current search-engine optimization, web strategy development and implementation
• Documented hands-on experience with web technologies, analytics and basic HTML
• Excellent communication/copywriting and analytical skills
• Industry experience with non-profits or community/group associations
• Ability to travel to NYC up to 5% of the time (4-6 times per year)
• Authorization to work in the US

• Friendliness, diplomacy, imperturbability, patience and strong sense of ownership/pride in work
• Success at establishing rules and policies to create productivity and community good-feeling
• Good sense of decorum and brand appropriateness (experience in a highly competitive academic environment leading to lifelong familial-type relationships could be helpful)
• Self-Motivation, organization, and an intrinsic understanding of social networking values

CONDITIONS

This role is sedentary and will require continuous use of the computer to perform the functions correctly over 80% of the time. Lifting up to 25 lbs. may be required.

SALARY

Commensurate with experience.
